It is useful for both. HRV describes the small timing differences between heartbeats and broadly reflects how much recovery capacity a body has on a given day. For dogs the value is in the trend against that dog's own baseline rather than in any single reading.

Pet tech has a vocabulary problem. Specification sheets are full of terms that sound precise and explain nothing, and it is genuinely hard to tell which capability is real and which is marketing. This page defines every term PawPulse uses across the Lucero collar, the app, and the journal, in plain language and without naming component vendors.

Sensing

Contactless radar sensing

Contactless radar sensing reads tiny chest and body movements to derive heart rate, heart rate variability, and respiration without touching skin. It is the sole biometric sensor in the PawPulse Lucero collar. Because it does not rely on light reaching skin, it works through a dense double coat, which defeats most optical approaches and is the reason owners are never asked to shave a patch of fur. The technique observes patterns in everyday vitals; it is not a clinical measurement and does not replace veterinary examination.

E-nose

The e-nose, or electronic nose, is the chemical sensing element in the Lucero collar. It samples volatile organic compounds in the air immediately around the dog and also reports temperature. Where radar describes what the body is doing, the e-nose describes the chemical environment that body is sitting in. Readings are context, layered alongside vitals and activity so a change in one signal can be read against conditions rather than in isolation. The e-nose does not identify substances clinically and makes no health determination on its own.

Six-axis IMU

A six-axis inertial measurement unit combines a three-axis accelerometer with a three-axis gyroscope, giving both linear motion and rotation. In the Lucero collar it is what turns movement into activity, gait, and posture: whether a dog is walking, trotting, scratching, shaking, lying down, or holding itself unusually still. Six axes matter because three alone cannot distinguish orientation from motion, and posture is often where a change shows up first. It is a movement sensor, not a biometric one; vitals come from the radar.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)

Volatile organic compounds are carbon-based chemicals that evaporate readily at room temperature, which is why they can be sensed in the air at all. Household cleaners, paint, smoke, and many natural processes release them. The Lucero e-nose samples VOC levels around the dog and reports them as environmental context alongside air quality, temperature, and humidity. PawPulse uses VOC readings to describe the conditions a dog is living in. It does not identify individual compounds clinically or draw health conclusions from them.

Baseline

A baseline is the ordinary range a specific dog sits in for a given signal, learned from that dog's own data rather than from a population average. Resting heart rate, respiration, activity, and sleep all get their own baseline. Once a baseline exists, a single reading stops being interesting on its own and the useful question becomes how far today sits from that dog's normal. Baselines keep refining as more days accumulate, and they shift legitimately with age, season, and routine.

Gait

Gait is the pattern of how a dog moves: stride timing, symmetry, and how weight shifts across a walk or trot. The collar inertial sensors sample motion fast enough to describe that pattern rather than just counting steps. Gait matters because movement quality often changes before an owner notices anything by eye, and because two dogs covering the same distance can be moving very differently. PawPulse surfaces gait changes as a pattern worth looking at, and interpretation belongs with a veterinarian.

Heart rate variability (HRV)

Heart rate variability describes the small differences in timing between consecutive heartbeats. A heart that beats at exactly the same interval every time is less adaptable than one with healthy variation. In broad terms HRV reflects how much recovery capacity a body has on a given day, which makes its trend more informative than any single reading. PawPulse tracks HRV continuously through contactless radar sensing and shows it against that dog's own baseline. It is a wellness signal, not a diagnosis.

Resting respiratory rate

Resting respiratory rate is how many breaths a dog takes per minute while genuinely at rest, usually measured while sleeping. It is one of the most useful everyday signals precisely because it is stable: a healthy dog resting rate tends to stay within a narrow band, so a sustained shift stands out. Counting it by hand means watching a sleeping dog with a stopwatch. The collar reads it continuously through contactless radar sensing and charts the trend against that dog baseline.

AI

Breed-aware baseline

A breed-aware baseline is a baseline informed by breed, size, and age before individual data has accumulated. A resting respiration figure that is unremarkable for a greyhound can be well outside normal for a bulldog, and an eleven-year-old sits nowhere near a puppy. Starting from breed-aware expectations means the app is useful in the first week instead of waiting a month to calibrate, and it keeps early insights from being anchored to a single average applied to every dog on the market.

Prism Insights

Prism Insights is the PawPulse intelligence layer. It takes the raw streams the Kinetic sensing stack produces, learns a breed-aware baseline for each individual dog, and surfaces the moments that sit outside that pattern. Crucially it looks for changes that persist across hours and days rather than reacting to a single high reading, which is what separates a signal worth an owner's attention from ordinary noise. Prism Insights describes patterns in plain language. It does not diagnose, treat, or predict illness.

Calming

Deep Calm

Deep Calm is a Pulse Rhythm setting that runs a steady 55 Hz haptic pattern through the collar. The frequency is low, continuous, and deliberately unlike an alert buzz. Owners use it during settling routines, long car rides, or any stretch where a dog has trouble winding down. Deep Calm is a comfort feature and nothing more: it is not a treatment, it does not replace training or behavioral work, and dogs respond to it differently, which is why it runs alongside Heartbeat Mode and Storm Mode rather than instead of them.

Heartbeat Mode

Heartbeat Mode is a Pulse Rhythm setting that plays a slow 60 BPM haptic pulse through the collar, roughly the cadence of a resting heartbeat. The idea is familiar rather than novel: the same reason a ticking clock is tucked next to a new puppy at night. Owners reach for it during separation, crate time, or unfamiliar environments. Like every Pulse Rhythm setting it is a comfort feature, not a treatment, and it works best as part of a routine rather than as a switch flipped during a crisis.

Pulse Rhythm

Pulse Rhythm is the haptic calming feature built into the PawPulse collar. Instead of a sound or a spray, it delivers gentle vibration patterns through the collar itself, with three settings: Deep Calm at 55 Hz, Heartbeat Mode at 60 BPM, and Storm Mode. Owners trigger it from the app or schedule it around known triggers such as fireworks, thunder, or being left alone. Pulse Rhythm is a comfort feature designed to help a dog settle. It is not a medical treatment and it does not replace training or veterinary advice.

Storm Mode

Storm Mode is the Pulse Rhythm setting built for loud, unpredictable events: thunder, fireworks, construction, a full house of guests. It uses a different haptic pattern from Deep Calm and Heartbeat Mode, shaped for moments when a dog is already reacting rather than settling in advance. Owners can trigger it from the app the moment a storm rolls in. Like the other settings it is a comfort feature, not a treatment, and it works best alongside the environment changes that help a dog feel safe.

Connectivity

LTE

LTE is the cellular connection the Lucero collar uses to send location and health data without needing a phone nearby. It is the primary link: fast, widely covered, and well understood. LTE coverage maps, however, are drawn for people standing on roads, not for a dog half a mile into a treeline, which is why the collar carries a satellite-ready backup path for the places where cellular service simply is not there. Coverage details are published as carrier and certification work completes.

Satellite-ready backup (NTN)

Satellite-ready backup, built on non-terrestrial network standards, is the fallback path the Lucero collar uses for location messaging when cellular coverage is unavailable. A GPS receiver can often still compute a position off-grid; the problem is that nothing can carry that position back to a phone. NTN closes that gap by routing a short message over satellite instead of a tower. It is designed for the moment a search actually starts, which is usually the moment cellular coverage has already run out.

Platform

Kinetic

Kinetic is the name of the PawPulse sensing stack: the full set of sensors in the collar and the low-level software that reads them. It covers contactless radar, the six-axis inertial unit, the e-nose, air quality, temperature and humidity context, and audio and vocalization analysis. Kinetic is the layer that produces clean signals; Prism Insights is the layer that interprets them. Keeping the two named separately makes it clear which part is measurement and which part is inference.

PawPulse Care

PawPulse Care is the clinic-facing side of the platform: connected veterinary care, powered by PawPulse. When an owner grants access, a veterinary team can review that dog trends, alert history, and owner notes in one place instead of relying on a single set of readings taken from an animal who is stressed by the exam room. Access is granted by the owner and can be withdrawn at any time. Clinic-side access is currently open to invited practices while the dashboard is in active development.
